{"id":3069,"date":"2015-02-08T07:12:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-08T13:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.activityhero.com\/blog\/?p=3069"},"modified":"2021-02-09T21:54:27","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T05:54:27","slug":"indoor-gardening-with-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahblog.activityhero.com\/indoor-gardening-with-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Indoor Gardening With Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">It may be the end of January but the sun is shining in our neck of the woods, which is actually pretty unusual for this time of year. \u00a0I live in the Pacific Northwest and it is usually freezing in January!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Whether the sun is shining in your area or not, this is the time of year that kids get antsy from being indoors a good amount of time. \u00a0So it\u2019s a great time for gardening with kids and for igniting their imagination, to dream, plan and create!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src="\&quot;https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/OzMFAj8YTaHQq3_pG0gSYXyGb5xDJlA3n3BjFq_JpoIKa066XWDcR_3RMjXjzRRUYDffDgoZQrPg_oYjbldD_OgMcC0Ez7x9XNgl8rD-VVhqpn8BCpPBl8EP6pAqaAIg5nI\&quot;" alt=\"gardening kids.jpg\" width=\"290px;\" height=\"382px;\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gardening with kids at this time of year? \u00a0Yes! \u00a0What do you think of when you think of a garden? \u00a0Vegetables, Flowers, Herbs? \u00a0A huge garden in a country backyard or a petite garden in the inner city?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I happen to believe that all children should have the confidence and knowledge to know that they can plant a seed in the ground and learn how to nurture and care for it in order to see the fruit of their labor. \u00a0After all growing flowers, fruits and veggies is a life skill that someday they may need!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here are a few guidelines that you might like to use to get you started growing a little garden;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Make it easy ~ In this day and age of being busy we want things to be easy. \u00a0Easy seeds to grow, easy gardens to tend and easy to gather supplies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Purchase child size plastic garden utensils so that the kids have their very own. \u00a0Even if you plant a small seed indoors, kids can become familiar with what each utensil does.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Don\u2019t get overwhelmed by the thought of a garden. \u00a0A \u201cgarden\u201d can be 1 seed in 1 container on 1 windowsill of your home. \u00a0There you have it&#8230;an indoor garden.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">See how easy a little garden can be? \u00a0Let\u2019s further investigate the reasons having a garden with your child is such an awesome thing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Types of Gardens you can grow with kids:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As mentioned above, you can have a teeny tiny garden on your window sill to a big elaborate garden outdoors, but since we are thinking along the lines of indoor gardening, let\u2019s start there.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can plant a seed in any kind of container you like; buckets, boots, milk cartons, 2 liter pop bottles&#8230;anything! \u00a0The main thing you need \u00a0to have is some drainage on the bottom so that over watering does not occur. \u00a0If the container you use doesn\u2019t already have holes, make them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Seeds that grow super easy indoors are Beans, \u00a0Radishes, \u00a0Onions, \u00a0Peas, \u00a0Sweet Alyssum, \u00a0Nasturtiums, \u00a0Parsley.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Make sure that you pick a spot in your house that will get at least 6-8 hours of sunlight. \u00a0If you don\u2019t have this, there are special growing light bulbs you can buy at your local garden nursery.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Be sure and do the above things together! Planning a garden is a big part of the fun.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Benefits of gardening with kids:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Creates a sense of self confidence and self reliance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stimulates the senses with wonderful smells. \u00a0Not to mention the fun of digging in dirt!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kids become curious and start to ask many \u201cscientific\u201d questions: How does the seed grow?
