Backpacking Session: Enter The Wilderness

The Camp Chrysalis 8-day backpacking session offers young adults the chance to learn how the wilderness can challenge and inspire. Days away from the cars, TVs and hurry of the front country, we explore some of the most rugged and pristine wilderness in California. Our attention is focused as much on ourselves and our group as it is on the land hosting us. With space for individual reflection (including a lengthy solo), open and responsive community dynamics, and strategically timed group activities led by staff and campers alike, campers develop their understanding of the land, living in a group, and of themselves.

We hike for six days, covering about 30 miles as we develop our skills traveling safely through the wilderness. Along the way we learn fundamental back country skills: cross-country navigation and survival sense, basic first aid, how to bear-proof our camp, operation and maintenance of back country equipment (such as stoves and water filters), and how to not shower for 8 days!

Each day on the trail includes a mix of structured activities, games, and discussions. While some are led by our staff, each group brings together a unique cluster of experiences, and we encourage camper-led activities -- many have become Camp Chrysalis backpacking traditions.

In addition to hiking most days, the backpacking session includes a peak-ascent expedition and an afternoon of solo time where campers write or sketch in their journals, follow an ant's expedition, and watch the sun glow on mountain peaks and lakes. We also learn from each other in discussion about environmental issues and wilderness ethics.

This year, snow level permitting, our session will be to the Ansel Adams Wilderness with high peaks and views, marmots, bears, and cold lakes. This session will include an afternoon of solo time, lots of wildflowers, sleeping out under the stars, and games and activities to deepen our friendships and understanding of each other and ourselves. Our backpacking sessions are for campers with prior backpacking experience.

My kid attended programs there from the age of 7 until they left for college. At every session and absolutely loved it - and so did we. Lee Tempkin's philosophy is to promote independence and support the kids in challenging themselves to do more than they believed they can do. Staff members are fantastic, and really do pay attention to who each camper is as a human being. During the years our kid was a Chrysalis camper they were also well-priced relative to other camps. My only caution is that you should cover the interior of your car with sheets and/or tarps before picking your kid up. I honestly did not know it was possible to get that filthy! However, scrape away the dirt and you will find a happy, exhausted, confident young person who had a tremendous time.

My kids have been going to Camp Chrysalis for 5 years and both loved it! Great outdoor experience and great way to get away from electronics. This year we've invited a new friend to come and he loved it and wanted to go back too! Can't wait for the next camp!
