About
Salem YMCA Sharks Swim Team
This YMCA program is available to swimmers age six through 18. Workouts include drills, technique instruction and conditioning. There is a prerequisite of being able to swim 80 yards front crawl with rotary (side) breathing and 80 yards I.M. (20 yards each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle). This is a year-round program that promotes the YMCA philosophy of building a healthy mind, spirit and body. The objectives of the program are to develop an individual’s confidence and self-esteem while continuing their swimming education and knowledge about aquatics Beginning Swimmers may choose to compete in YMCA and Summer League meets. Intermediate and Advanced Swimmers may choose to compete in YMCA, Summer League, and USA Swim Meets. An annual registration fee of $65 with USA Swimming is required for the individual swimmer, in addition to monthly Swim Team dues, to participate in USA swim meets. Additional meet fees apply for each USA swim meet based on events entered. Swimmers who are interested in competing in YMCA meets and advancing to compete at the YMCA Regional Level must be YMCA members for 90 days prior to the Regional meet. Summer League and YMCA Swim Meets are held on Saturday mornings, and USA meets are generally two-day meets where swimmers may swim on Saturday and/or Sunday. Competition is encouraged, but is not a requirement. Dues are paid monthly and are paid on the 5th of the month. Swimmers are required to sign up for bank draft, which automatically pays dues monthly. The first practice (try-out) for a new swimmer is free. Call to schedule a free try-out: (503) 399-2792
