Altadena Stables is a full service, equine facility. We offer lessons, boarding, summer camps, multi-breed training, injury rehabilitation, mare foaling and more. We have trails around, and through the San Gabriel Mountains for the trail riding enthusiast.

Altadena Stables is a fun, professionally run, full service equine facility offering all the best of the horsemanship experience. We're committed to giving our clients the ultimate equine experience in a safe family friendly environment.

Riding starts from the ground up, and encompasses more than just riding instruction. Grooming, for example, helps to develop a rapport and an understanding between rider and horse. We have developed the Core Equestrian Technique which focuses on the foundational skills of riding, and builds in incremental steps.

The skills that are learned help the rider gain the proper posture, balance, and nonverbal communication in order to develop a partnership with the horse. A riding helmet will be supplied by the stable for first lesson. If the rider plans to continue with lessons, they are required to purchase riding boots, pants, and helmet. 

Our Staff

Janell Gruss – Instructor

Janell Gruss has been actively pursuing her equine career since 1982. She began in 4-H, then progressed to AQHA shows, where she was ranked nationally, competing in Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, English Equitation and Hunter Under Saddle.

Since graduating from Michigan State University's Horse Management Program in 1994, Janell has held management and/or training positions on Breeding Farms, Quarter Horse Show barns and Thoroughbred Racetracks. For 6 years, she worked for Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, as an exercise rider and assistant trainer.

Janell was taught, and continues to use, the "resistance free" style of training. Whether your horse needs "lightening up," suppling, is off the racetrack, or needs to be started as a 2 year old, Janell's extensive experience will help horse and rider reach their goals.
