SAFARI SCIENCE
Wednesdays, January 29-April 30 (no class Feb 19, Apr 9; 12 weeks)

Students discover all the beautiful continent of Africa has to offer as they observe animal behavior on virtual safaris, conduct wildlife research and study the intricate ecosystems of Africa’s various biomes. All lab costs are included in the registration fee.

LAB SCHEDULE:
GEOGRAPHY OF AFRICA - Wednesday, January 29
Students will study and use maps to explore Africa's geography including its physical features and regions and use math to calculate the distance between different places.
AFRICAN RIVERS - Wednesday, February 5
Students will explore Africa's major rivers as we study their importance to people, wildlife and ecosystems and examine the data scientists collect to monitor their health.
THE CONGO RAINFOREST - Wednesday, February 12
Students will discover the rich biodiversity of the Congo Rainforest study how it is negatively affected by human activity.
AFRICAN PLANTS - Wednesday, February 26
Students will study the diverse plant life of the African continent and conduct an experiment to see why different plants have developed different adaptations based on where they grow.
THE BIG FIVE - Wednesday, March 5
Students explore Africa's "Big 5 Animals": lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and cape buffalo. Students will conduct an experiment to see why these animals have developed different physical characteristics depending on their diets.
MIGRATION AND TRACKING - Wednesday, March 12
Students will learn about how scientists track animal's migrations across Africa by mapping migratory paths and migration simulation game to see if they would be able to make the journey themselves.
COASTAL AND MARINE LIFE - Wednesday, March 19
Penguins on the beach?! Students will explore the rich diversity of Africa's coastal communities and discover how penguins are able to thrive on the beaches of South Africa without ice or snow.
AFRICAN ANIMAL ARCHITECTS - Wednesday, March 26
Students will discover how animals like termites and birds create architectural masterpieces and use engineering to build their own animal homes.
AFRICAN WILDLIFE AFTER DARK - Wednesday, April 2
Students explore the unique adaptations of Africa's nocturnal animals like the aye-aye and conduct an experiment to discover the unique way it finds its food in the dark.
HABITAT RESTORATION - Wednesday, April 16
Students will learn about habitat fragmentation and restoration as they use logic and creativity to design their own habitat restoration plans by taking the needs of the local people and the environment into consideration.
WILDLIFE RESCUE AND REHAB - Wednesday, April 23
Students will explore how injured and orphaned animals are rescued, cared for and returned to the wild as learn how to perform the daily tasks of a wildlife rehabilitator.
VIRTUAL SAFARI - Wednesday, April 30
Students will embark on a virtual safari by watching live wildlife video feeds to observe and identify animals in their natural habitat and study their behaviors and interactions.
