About
Fig Tree

Fig Tree is an independent Jewish education program for children ages 3 – 11. We offer small, engaging weekly classes throughout Brooklyn, for families seeking a Hebrew School alternative. Our mission is to instill pride and encourage growth of Jewish identity in our students, rooted in a strong foundation of Jewish religion, culture and heritage.

In a fun and inclusive environment, kids learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, culture and text experientially: through art, crafting, drama, filmmaking, cooking, gardening, and so much more. Fig Tree classes which incorporate both Jewish cultural, textual and religious instruction AND Hebrew each week, our Hebrew language classes are language-only. Students in 2nd - 7th grade will learn modern Hebrew through conversation, games and text.

All classes, regardless of age, will follow the same core curriculum in terms of themes, topics and structure. The specific content will be differentiated by age and, in the case of Hebrew language, skill level. Our mission is to instill pride and encourage growth of Jewish identity in our students, rooted in a strong foundation of Jewish religion, culture and heritage.

Rachel Weinstein White - Executive Director & Founder

Rachel Weinstein White wears a lot of hats. Part entrepreneur, part management consultant, and Mama to her three boys, Rachel created Fig Tree in 2015 after not being able to find a Jewish education program that resonated with her family. Prior to founding Fig Tree, Rachel built a successful consulting practice catering to clients in EdTech and other emerging technologies.

Before that, Rachel spent 15 years in various senior roles at Yahoo!, WebMD, IDT, and Accenture. (Creating and heading Fig Tree has been, by far, her most rewarding professional experience to date!) Rachel is active in several non-profit and charitable organizations, and is currently the Board Chair at Little Essentials.

Rachel has a BA in English Lit from Vassar College. In her (admittedly limited) spare time, she enjoys the beach, all things food/ wine related, and is a voracious reader. Rachel lives in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn with her husband and three sons.
