About
KoKo NYC

KoKo NYC is the arts education program of Open Source Gallery, a non-profit arts organization based in Brooklyn. KoKo NYC has served over 8,000 children through programs in local schools, the Brooklyn Public Library and the CAMBA Flagstone Family Center (a family homeless shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn) KoKo NYC provides art-based science and engineering classes in school and after-school programs throughout New York City. We also offer annual Soap Box Summer Workshops and after-school programs such as Boat Building and Inventor’s Lab at our site in Brooklyn.

Build a Fort (Workshop): Come help us transform the Tiny House Project into a tiny fortress! Kids will be challenged to get creative with repurposed materials to fortify the tiny house and create a castle-style fort. Using simple engineering techniques, kids will also build ballistas to launch paper airplanes and other harmless projectiles from their castle creation.

Monika Wuhrer / Executive Director

Monika Wuhrer is the founder and executive director of Open Source Gallery and KoKo NYC. Originally from Austria, she received her MFA in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Monika founded Open Source Gallery and its education wing in 2007. She is the mother of 3 boys and realized that education in New York City is missing programs that encourage kids to play, explore and build without the standard supervision parents and other programs provide, but by letting kids assess their own risk, while still being supervised and kept safe. Monika has exhibited in the US, Norway, Austria, Italy, Thailand, Finland, France, Switzerland, and Japan.
