About
Little Opera

At Little Opera at Grace, we make operas with kids. In our after-school and camp programs, elementary school aged students work with our team of artists to WRITE, COMPOSE, ACT, SING, DESIGN, & PERFORM their very own mini-operas. The process is a holistic approach to arts education, with a focus on teaching students how to collaboratively make everything themselves.

For 11 years, Little Opera has been training student imaginations through this comprehensive creative project. Over the course of the year, students will write a story, craft a libretto, compose melodies, receive singing and acting coachings, choreograph movement, design their own props and costumes, and rehearse & perform a 15-20 minute show. The final result? A micro opera that is 100% built from their own imaginations.

Why Opera?

  • It’s Ambitious - You can’t make an opera until you learn to do everything: write, compose, act, sing, design, & perform.

  • It’s Creative - Every single one of the thousands of ideas it takes to create an opera: 100% student imagined

  • It’s Empowering - The #1 change parents report seeing in their children after a season at Little Opera: Confidence.

  • It’s Collaborative - Kids learn to compromise and make decisions as a team. After 130 hours of collaborating with his small mixed-aged group, one 3rd grader’s biggest takeaway:  “I learned that sometimes my idea isn’t the best idea.”

Awesome program! Great for kids in all aspects. My son loves Little Opera so much and looking forward to his 2nd year. Danah started when he's in 2nd grade. When I first know about this program I wondered if they really let the kids do all the things to create the opera. They really did. The kids did everything with the minimum guideline from their teachers. It's an incredible experience. I'm so happy he is a part of this unique program.

I can't recommend this program enough. My daughter is about to start her 3rd season with Little Opera. The teachers and artists at Little Opera create such a nurturing and creative environment for these kids. What I see the kids getting out of it:
* teamwork and cooperation -- working with the other kids in the program to discuss their ideas and collaborate on something together
* creative outlets in so many ways -- imagination and emotions (writing story lines, lyrics, melodies), movement (choreography), visual art (stage sets and costumes), and so much more...
* self confidence! sharing your ideas, advocating for them in the creative process, working with others, and finally performing the whole thing in front of a big audience... multiple times!

Note that my daughter is not one of those extroverted types who just love to perform. What I see as the greatest potential for this program is to help kids expand their view of themselves -- to show our kids that they have it in them to do something really big, something they might not think they are capable of doing. The teachers and artists in this program put so much into this experience for the kids. We are lucky to have this program in SF!
