My son really enjoys the Music Discovery Camp. This year will be his third-- he learns a great deal and has fun. It's a fabulous experience that includes music, performance, theatre (including set design), dance, and games!!! It's a busy week that ends with a performance and recital. The theme means that this is music with a context!

Parents! Grandparents! Have your music interested-children or grand-children (ages 7 to 15) attended the SFEMS-sponsored Music Discovery Workshop yet? If not, this summer run, do not walk, to sign them up for July 31-August 5, 2011. This workshop is led by Tish Berlin. My two granddaughters attended for the past two years. All the children attending (I signed them in each morning) were enthusiastic and became more so as the week progressed. The workshop was held at Crowden school, which is at the corner of Sacramento and Rose in Berkeley. By week’s end, the children had not just studied their major, early music instrument (they could choose from cello, viola da gamba, violin, recorder or harpsichord) and worked with it in an ensemble, they also had created puppets, costumes and stage sets, baked tarts and learned songs and dances of the period for the then-week’s Elizabethan Country Fair theme. This was simply the most extraordinary learning experience in five days that I have ever observed. Suzanne Siebert
