About
Pinecone Active Learning

Pinecone Active Learning is compliant with CDC guidelines.  Staff is fully vaccinated, masking is required for everyone, students are three feet apart with plastic shields around them, doors are open with air purifiers.

Pinecone Active Learning provides after-school programs in Math, Reading, and Writing for students from three years old through high school.  The younger students start by  learning numbers and letters, then progress at their own pace through daily work and twice weekly classes to master concepts presented in step-by-step booklets.

Students receive one-on-one help as needed, while being gently encouraged to focus on simple instructions and examples to become more independent learners.  Each student is placed at an appropriate starting point based on a brief assessment.   The basic philosophy of Pinecone is that each student must have an opportunity to learn at his/her own pace at just the right level with just the right amount of work -- each day.  Mastery is what builds confidence and motivation to achieve great things.  Learning how to learn assures the possibilities.

And, now -- Pinecone comes to you online!

Our Staff

Vivian Hobbs has been involved with children’s education for the last 30 years.  She previously owned and operated a major learning franchise for 15 years with over 200 students ranging from 3 years old through high school, including students with various learning disabilities.

In 2007, she developed Pinecone Active Learning. Here she was able to bring in additional elements to the standard supplemental math and reading programs. She added application/word problems and some common core concepts to the math program. She also added a very sophisticated grammar program to the reading program. Finally, she developed her own writing program which has helped dozens of children learn the basics of writing.

Ms. Hobbs graduated from UC San Diego with an MS Degree in Industrial Psychology and a minor in mathematics and research design. She held research and math-related positions in Silicon Valley for several years prior to embarking into the field of education.

Ms. Vivian, as her students call her, will be your instructor for Pinecone class offerings.

Vivian has been a huge help during these months of unexpected home schooling our second grader. Our son struggled with writing and as a result fought against homework and free writing. Vivian provides clear, concise writing homework twice a week along with grammar assignments, and is tough but fair (and kind) with her feedback - as a result our son has improved significantly. He still doesn't like doing the homework - but he gets it done and enjoys class. Thank you Vivian!

Thank you for asking. This program starts with the basics such as subject, predicate, parts of speech and the elements of writing a good sentence. I have been teaching 2nd graders (and up) with this program for ten years, and I work with each child at his or her own pace whether in class or online. You would be pleasantly surprised at your son's progress. Thanks again for asking! -
