Playful Literacy is a play-based reading readiness class for preschoolers and kindergarteners that uses movement and games to teach pre-literacy skills. Students will learn letter identification, rhyming, syllable segmentation and sound manipulation through whole body movements that make meaningful connections between sounds and letters. Well-known reading readiness programs like Sounds-in-Motion and the Whole-Body Listening Bear will be implemented.
Kids will engage in play-based games, arts and crafts and movement activities like Sound Trivia and Pin the Tail on the Sound with the end goal of learning to blend phonemes to read simple words! The curriculum drives a dynamic experience to get kids motivated to read and instill a love of learning. Classes are led by reading specialists and speech- language pathologists with master’s degrees in language development and training in highly effective reading methods like Orton-Gillingham. The teacher to student ratio of 1:5 ensures classes focus on learning outcomes while having fun. All classes come with an e-book full of activities to try at home!
The Indy Lab, an education company focused on innovative ways to teach and learn, was started by serial momtrepreneur, Frida Matute, who is a medical pediatric speech-language pathologist and owner of a private speech practice called Indy Speech Services. Frida, an SLP of nearly a decade of experience at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue in NYC, started a toy company in 2016 by entering the NYU Entrepreneurial Competition and launching a kickstarter. Ever since then, she has been interested in exploring services and products that help families learn how to engage in interactive, guided play as well as how to embed multi-sensory teaching strategies into academic literacy programs. Playful Literacy, a new class that started in the spring of 2019, bring together Frida’s years of experience bridging play, movement and research into a reading readiness class that is fun and engaging for kids from pre-k to second grade.
