About
Touchstone Climbing

Touchstone Climbing Inc. began in 1994 as a dream of Mark and Debra Melvin to bring indoor rock climbing to San Francisco. After scouring the city for the perfect location and raising start-up capital, they opened Mission Cliffs in 1995 in the vibrant Mission District of San Francisco. The new gym captured the imagination of the city and immediately set a new standard for indoor climbing facilities world-wide. Within a month of its opening, Mission Cliffs hosted the sport climbing National Championship competition, introducing climbers from around the country to what was quickly heralded as the most spectacular facility in the world. Touchstone Climbing Inc. is arguably the best-known indoor climbing operation in the world.

With seven gyms in Northern California, we are the biggest company in country and have hosted more national accredited roped climbing competitions than any other organization. But our true success comes not from what we do, but why we do it. From owners to belay staff, route setters to instructors, we believe in creating a place where we can all come together and do what we love. We are not just gyms. We are communities. Whether you are an experienced climber, a bright-eyed newbie, or just someone looking for a great place to work out, you'll find your place with Touchstone.

Our Staff

Mark Melvin / Founder

Mark and Debra Melvin co-founded Touchstone Climbing in 1995 with the help of several dozen passionate climber investors. He spent 15 years in the corporate world, which he credits his sense of how not to run a company. Mark’s background includes a M.S. from U.C. Berkeley in the school of Engineering. He has dabbled in most forms of climbing, from the Cassin on Denali, to several dozen ascents of El Capitan, his preference being multi-pitch trad routes. He’s run a dozen ultra marathons, and fallen over his handlebars many times chasing his son Daniel on downhill mountain biking adventures.

A dozen rowdy 2nd grade boys had a blast at my son's climbing birthday party. The Berkeley Ironworks staff were fantastic: courteous during reservations, understanding with changes, relaxed about boy-rowdiness, and supportive of each climber.

The setup is pretty straightforward. Each child has to have an adult fill out and sign the climbing authorization forms for the kids to climb. Everyone meets at the back wall where the easier climbs are located. I took the initiative to review rules of the climbing gym -- no running, no climbing without an adult, stay out of the gym and weights area, bathrooms are over there, etc -- before the staff took over. The staff have the kids don their harnesses and they go through some basic safety rules. Then they start tying in the kids and away they climb.

I was surprised at how many wild and rowdy boys were suddenly timid after they climbed a little way up. But the staff are very relaxed about the kids coming down and trying again later. Some kids headed all the way to the top; some went barely above their own height until the end of the party was looming near. Some aggressive soccer players weren't so aggressive with the rock wall; some timid soccer players climbed up high and fast like firecrackers. Some kids gravitated toward the Foosball table for alternative fun. Just shows the diversity of skills and comfort levels.
