Sewing, Composting, and Responsibility
3-Day Summer Life Skills Camp
This week’s focus is all about caring—for what we use, what we waste, and how we take responsibility. Campers will dive into basic sewing skills and hands-on composting activities that build creativity, independence, and eco-awareness. From stitching fabric to feeding worms, each activity encourages practical learning and thoughtful choices that can make a lasting impact at home and in the world.
Day 1 – Worm Farming
What’s squiggly, wiggly, and surprisingly helpful? Worms! Campers will build a small worm composting bin and learn how worms help break down food scraps to create rich, healthy soil. They will care for their worm farms throughout the week, observing how they contribute to composting.
Day 2 – Soil Nutrients and Testing
Campers will dive into the science of soil! They will learn about the essential nutrients plants need to thrive, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Using simple soil testing kits, campers will test soil samples for pH and nutrient levels.
Day 3 – Composting 101
Campers will explore how composting works, what materials can be composted, and how it helps reduce waste. They'll create their own mini compost setup, incorporating what they’ve learned about soil nutrients. They'll leave with tips to start composting at home and how it benefits their plants.
