In this course, students will explore how art and science are connected both on earth and beyond. Students will create unique works of art using science while exploring various topics including math, physics, chemistry, earth science and more.

LAB SCHEDULE:
CYANOTYPES- Monday, January 23
Students explore the science behind sunography and use the power of the sun to create their own works of art.
PAPERMAKING- Monday, January 30
Today, students discover all the uses for the parts of a tree and then make their own paper from recycled tree pulp.
WORLD’S BLACKEST PAINT- Monday, February 6
This week, students learn about the visible light spectrum and colors and experiment with a paint that absorbs over 99% of light.
NATURAL PIGMENTS- Monday, February 13
Students learn about how paint is made with piments using chemistry and make their own paint using things found in nature.
PRINTING PRESS AND STAMPS- Monday, February 27
Today, students explore the history and science of the printing press, stamps and ink as they make their own stamps to take home.
GRAVITY PAINTING- Monday, March 6
This week students experiment with gravity and force and use them to create abstract art.
SCIENCE OF POTTERY- Monday, March 20
Students learn about the soil and its different textures and properties, then process natural clay from the ground to create their own pottery.
SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION- Monday, March 27
This week, students learn about scientific illustration and how scientists use math and scale to document their finds. We will then go on an outdoor expedition to test these techniques themselves!
MANDALAS AND SYMMETRY- Monday, April 10
Today, we learn about the history and science behind mandalas and use math and creativity to create their own.
ARCHITECTURE- Monday, April 17
Students learn about the engineering behind the architecture of famous monuments revered as works of art, and then create their own monument.
ART AND TECHNOLOGY- Monday, April 24
This week, students learn how art can be created using technology and program a robot to draw a picture.
ART CONSERVATION- Monday, May 1
Today, students will learn about how art conservationists use chemistry to preserve ancient pieces of artwork and then get to test these techniques on real statues and paintings.
